Can Sports Drink enhance your Wushu Training?
In recent years, we witness the onslaught of different sports drinks such as 100plus, H-TWO-O, Redbull and Pokari Sweat etc competing in the sports/ isotonic drink category. All these sports drinks claim to hydrate better and provide the extra energy needed for sports. Sports drinks also help to replenish lost vitamins and minerals.
The question is, are these chemically formulated sports drinks any better than water?
Here are 3 advices on how to consume sports drinks properly, and when to simply opt for plain water.
Sports drinks are meant for hard core Sports and Trainings
Sports drinks are basically water enriched with vitamins, minerals and electrolytes important for a professional athlete’s sports performance. Any sports person can tell you that you lose lots of vitamins, minerals and electrolytes within an hour of profuse sweating. Consuming sports drinks before and after exercise helps replenish and control the loss of these nutrients, improving sports performance and reducing the effects of after sports muscle cramps.
Effective Wushu trainings are more than often a form of anaerobic exercise. These hardcore trainings lead to rapid glucose breakdown to produce fuel for the body. The body also loses mineral salts and water quickly. Therefore, if you are heading for a full-fledge hardcore 2 hours Wushu Training, consider sports water to keep yourself in optimum condition during the training.
However, this also means that sports drinks, when consumed on normal daily basis or when doing light exercises, would provide more than necessary amount of nutrients for your body. The high sugar and carbohydrate levels in sports drinks would also cause one to gain weight. So opt for plain water to simply hydrate yourself if you are doing some light workouts or Wushu coaching to avoid gaining weight after each training session!
Sports drinks Tastes better than Water
Most people prefer the sweet and refreshing taste of sports drinks over water, which means that they are more likely to drink it when doing Wushu. This keeps Wushu athletes and people working out in hot weather hydrated, especially when some people do not consume water at all.
However, the better taste is contributed by the high sugar content and artificial flavorings in these sports drinks, which are all not beneficial to one’s health in the long run. Therefore, when selecting your sports drinks, always choose sports drinks with a healthier logo sign on it, indicating less sugar and salt for a healthier lifestyle.
Sports drinks and Water helps regulate Body Temperature
Your body is made up of 50% – 70% water. These vast amount of water is essential in keeping your body temperate constant and preventing your body from over-heating. When working out, excessive loss of water and increasing body temperature can lead to heat stroke and heart burn, both potentially fatal. Therefore, it is important to hydrate yourself during Wushu trainings and workouts.
Sports drinks, although lower in water content, tastes better and thus people tend to consume more in one serving. Water on the other hand, being 100% water, hydrates better than sports drinks. When coming to a choice between these two, just bear in mind that water is just water, while sports drinks is water with added nutrients, sugar and salt. When doing strenuous Wushu trainings for more than an hour, go for sports drinks to replenish your lost nutrients and water. When doing light workouts or just coaching Wushu, opt for plain water instead to replenish your water loss and keep your body temperature constant, all without the added weight of un-burnt sugar and carbohydrates.
